In the hilly Northern Greek region of Naoussa, Taralas Estate is a progressive organic winery, and this superb red is made from the local Xinomavro grape. Ruby red in the glass with brickish hints. A perfumed nose of wild cherries, sundried tomatoes, roses and smoked meats. Firm yet ripe tannins and balanced acidity

Challenge 21 - You must be 18 or over to buy alcohol. You must not buy alcohol on behalf of those under 18. We apply the "Challenge 21" policy to all delivery and collection orders. We will not supply if the person receiving or collecting orders appears under the age of 21.

Orders placed before 1pm each day Monday – Friday will be despatched the same day as long as the stock is in immediate availability. For some items, we may need to get stock from our stores which could delay despatch by 1 day (2 days in some situations)

Items in stock will be despatched on the same day and delivered via courier. This will usually be delivered on the following working day but please allow one extra day if this is not possible. Deliveries to Scotland & non UK mainland will usually be delivered in 2-3 working days.

We charge a flat fee of £6.90 for delivery if your order is under 20kg and £10 inc-VAT if the order is over 20kg. Free delivery is available for orders above £100 (inc VAT).

We aim to ship items within the same working day but always within 2 working days, subject to the order being placed before 1pm and subject to the availability of stock. *If stock is not available at our warehouse and needs to come back from one of our stores before we ship to you, your order may take up to 5 working days to be shipped – whether that is to your delivery address or to one of our stores.

We want all our cusomers to be 100% happy with their order and it is our aim to ensure that all orders are supplied to our customers arrive in perfect condition.
You have the right to cancel your order at any time without being charged for the goods ordered within 14 days of purchase.

Excludes perishable or personalised products or those products that have been specified as non-returnable.

If you need to cancel an order you have just placed, you can do so by calling our customer service team on 020 8951 9840 and provide your order confirmation number and name.
If you call us after your item has shipped, we will be unable to cancel it and you will need to return to us.

Shipping charges are non-refundable. We advise you to obtain a postal receipt or send the items back via recorded delivery.

At a Glance

Naoussa is regarded as one of Greece’s two most important red wine regions, alongside Nemea. It is a verdant mountainous region in Greek Macedonia, where the climate is as much continental as it is Mediterranean. The winters are cold and often severe, and the summers warm to hot. The vineyards are mostly planted between 150m to 350m which helps moderate the summer heat

The grape synonymous with the region is Xinomavro, which  translates to “acid black”; a reference to the black skins of the grape and elevated acidity of the wines. The wines themselves are often relatively pale in colour, with a brickish tint -in many ways similar to Nebbiolo, with fine grippy tannins, perfumed aromas of roses, game and typically hints of tomato and olive. These are great food wines of structure and elegance, and with a great potential for ageing

The Taralas family have had an important role to play in Greek wine production, establishing a vine nursery in the late 1920s, which ws one of the only sources of grafted vines and thus  instrumental in driving the recovery of the Greek vineyards from the Phylloxera outbreak of 1935. 

Today Christos Taralas runs this 10 hectare organic estate in Naoussa, populated with low yielding 40 year old Xinomavro vines located in the foothills of eastern Vermio at an altitude of 300 metres, above sea level. The yield is about 7000 kg per hectare and organic sprays such as zeolite, dolomite and other minerals, as well as mixtures of nettle and other wild herbs and plants are used. 

Classic red vinification, with the whole bunches intact in the fermentation tank, cold settling for 4-5 days at 10°C, then fermentation with native yeasts at 22°C for 14-18 days, then pressing and transfer with the fine lees for maturation for 2 years in second-use barrels.

A perfumed nose of raspberry, rose petals, black pepper, game and spices with a hint of typical sun-dried tomato notes. Medium-bodied with fresh acidity, and compact ripe yet grippy tannins. Great length, complexity and character for the price. A fantastic match for game, braised red meats and strong cheeses. Will age well
